Bushido Dojos – Dan Grading Curriculum
These grades are representative of the SKIA and JKA curriculum. (The same curriculum) Please note that they are grades awarded by the Bushido Dojos grading committee and recognised within Bushido Dojos.
If attending a JKA or SKIA class you may have to resit this grade under their constitution.
Shodan Grading
Minimum age for Shodan is 10 years
A minimum time span of six (6) months is required between 1st Kyu and Shodan grading.
This time requirement does not apply for 3rd to 2nd Kyu and 2nd to 1st Kyu.
Must have recommendation of Registered Dojo
Must attend at least three (3) black belt club sessions within the 6 month period.
Compulsory Kata, that must be known and understood: • Heian Shodan to Heian Godan and Tekki Shodan. Must select and demonstrate one of the following: • Bassai-Dai, Kanku-Dai, Enpi, Jion, Jitte.
Nidan Grading
Minimum age for Nidan is 16 years.
Younger students remain as a Junior Nidan until 16 years of age.
Must be Shodan, for a minimum of two (2) years and have been training consistently.
Must have recommendation of Registered Dojo
Have been an assistant instructor and have run classes independently.
Must attend full seminar and engage with black belt club training at least two times in preceding year
Compulsory Kata, that must be known and understood: • All the above. Must select and demonstrate one of the following: • Bassai-Dai, Kanku-Dai, Enpi, Jion, Jitte, Hangetsu, Tekki-Nidan, BassaiSho, Gankaku, Kanku-Sho. (Note: must be different Kata than chosen for Shodan)
Sandan Grading
Nominees must be twenty (20) years of age or, over.
Younger students remain as a Junior level Sandan until 20 years of age.
Must be Nidan for a minimum of three (3) years and have been training consistently.
Must have recommendation of the grading committee.
Must attend 1 full seminar and/0r at least 5 black belt club sessions and train.
Note: Nidan & Sandan Gradings incorporate Jiyu ippon Kumite. One must demonstrate effective blocking/movement and follow this with the demonstration of effective attacking combinations, blocks and counter attacks with control.
Jodan level, Chudan level and Gedan level. 2 on each side of the body.
May demonstrate one of the following: • Hangetsu, Tekki-Nidan, Bassai-Sho, Gankaku, Kanku-Sho, Sochin, Tekki Sandan, Chinte, Ji’in, Nijushiho. (Note: must be different Kata than chosen for Nidan)
Yondan Grading
The minimum time between last grading is four (4) years or, as follows;
• Instructor - Four (4) years
• Senior Assistant Instructor - Minimum time subject to special conditions
• Assistant Instructor - Minimum time plus one (1) year [Five (5) years]
• Other Dan Grade Karateka – Minimum time plus two (2) years [Six (6) years] 3.
Must know and be able to demonstrate the Mawashi Uke technique.
Must have recommendation of Grading committee.
Must attend a full seminar or have attended and train in all sessions
Note: Yondan Gradings may incorporate Jiyu ippon kumite One must demonstrate effective blocking and demonstrate effective attacking combinations, blocks and counter attacks with control.
Jodan (2) Chudan (2) Gedan (2)
Must have been a centre referee for a Dan Run Tournament
There is no compulsory Kata for this level but the following should be known and understood: • Meikyo, Wankan, Unsu A different Kata should be selected that has not been previously performed in another grading.
Godan Grading
The minimum time between last grading is five (5) years or, as follows;
• Instructor - Five (5) years
• Senior Assistant Instructor - Minimum time subject to special conditions
• Assistant Instructor – Minimum time plus one (1) years [Six (6) years]
• Other Dan Grade Karateka – Minimum time plus two (2) years [Seven (7) years]
Must attend full seminar and train in all sessions. Run Black belt club lessons.
There is no compulsory Kata for this level but at least one of the following should be known and understood: • Meikyo, Wankan, Unsu, Gojushiho-Dai, Gojushiho-Sho A different Kata should be selected that has not been previously performed in another grading.
